Polar Ice Thanksgiving Shootout results

The Arizona Hockey Union flexed its muscle at the seventh annual Polar Ice Thanksgiving Shootout, claiming the U16 AA trophy, and finishing runner up in the U18 AA and Bantam AA divisions.

The tournament, which was held Nov. 28-30, featured 10 separate divisions ranging from Mite to Midget.

Results from the individual divisions follow.

Midget U18 AA

Riverside, Calif.'s Inland Valley Wild captured the Midget U18 AA championship with a 4-2 win over Arizona Hockey Union U18 Prep.

The AHU U18s had gone 3-1-0 in pool play, including a 7-1 loss to Inland Valley to open its round robin schedule.

Other Arizona teams in the division included Arizona Hockey Union '92s (2-2-0) and the Peoria Roadrunners (1-3-0).

AHU U18s' Matt Horst was tied for third individually in scoring with nine points (five goals, four assists), while teammate Alex Moggel was tied for fifth with AHU '92s Vinny Eck at seven points (two goals, five assists each).

 

Midget U16 AA

The Arizona Hockey Union '93s took home the Midget U16 AA championship following a 7-5 win over the DYHA Firebirds on Sunday.

Tied at 5 heading to the third period, AHU '93 got goals from Jake Smets and Kyle Matheson to seal the win.

AHU '93 had gone 4-1-0 over the tournament, with its only loss coming to DHYA, 5-1, in the final round robin game.

DYHA finished runner-up after finishing 2-2-1, though advanced to the championship game with a 2-1 win over the VOSHA Mustangs on Saturday night.

Mission Arizona Ice – Red was 1-2-1 over the tournament, falling to AHU '93 in the semifinals, 5-1.

VOSHA finished 2-2-1.

AHU '93 had the top three individual scorers of the tournament in Max Mahood (six goals, five assists), Colin Bresnehan (four goals, four assists) and Ryan Fehnel (three goals, five assists).

DYHA's Chris Gallo was tied for fifth in points with five goals. Matheson (four goals, assist), Michael Ferreira of Mission Arizona (four goals, assist), and Cody Gylling of DYHA (two goals, three assists) also had five points.

 

Midget U16 A

The Phoenix Polar Bears captured the Midget U16A crown, downing the Orange County Hockey Club with Ryan O'Shea's third period goal.

The Polar Bears had gone 3-0-1 over the course of the tournament.

Other area teams included Mission Arizona Ice – White (1-1-2), which captured the consolation game with a 3-2 win over the Peoria Roadrunners.

The Roadrunners went 0-3-1 during the tournament.

O'Shea was tied for the lead with seven points (four goals, three assists).

Mission Arizona's Tanner Palmer and Corey Briody both had five points.

 

Bantam AA

Tied at 4, the Orange County Hockey Club got a third period goal to down the Arizona Hockey Union U14s and capture the Bantam AA championship.

The AHU U14s went 3-2-0 over the tournament, with the only other loss coming to Orange County in its opening game of the round robin.

DYHA was 2-2-0 in the tournament, including a 3-2 loss to AHU U14 in the semifinals.

The Jr. Coyotes '95 went 0-4-0, including a 4-1 loss to Orange County in the semifinals.

AHU U14's Robbie Downing (five goals, five assists) and Aaron Bland (four goals, five assists) led all scorers over the tournament. Teammate Aaron Handa was tied for fourth with seven points (goal, six assists), while DYHA's Spencer Smith was tied for sixth (four goals, assist).

 

Bantam A

Knotted at 4 in the third period, the VOSHA Mustangs got a goal from Eric Calcavecchia to seal a 5-4 win and the Bantam A championship over the Phoenix Polar Bears.

VOSHA went 4-1-0 over the tournament.

The Polar Bears, meanwhile, finished 3-2-0.

Other area teams included the Peoria Roadrunners (3-1-0) and the Ozzie Bears (1-2-1).

Calcavecchia led all scorers with 10 points (eight goals, two assists), while VOSHA's Steven Swanson had eight points (two goals, six assists). The Polar Bears' Vince Alongi and the Roadrunners Blake Simmons each notched seven points.

 

Bantam B

DYHA got three goals from three different players in capturing the Bantam B crown over Mission Arizona Ice, 3-0.

The Firebirds finished the tournament 4-1-0. Mission Arizona went 2-3-0, including a 3-1 win in the semifinals over Arizona Hockey Union U12.

AHU U12 was 3-1-0, the Phoenix Polar Bears were 2-2-0, and the Peoria Roadrunners and Arizona Heat both finished 1-3-0.

Peoria's Deric Storbeck, DYHA's Todd Cooper, the Polar Bear's Tyler Golembiewski, and AHU U12's Todd Burgess all finished with six points over the tournament.

 

Pee Wee A

With a 4-1 win over the Phoenix Polar Bears '96, the Orange County Hockey Club took home the Pee Wee A championship.

The loss in the championship game was the only one of the tournament for the '96 Polar Bears (4-1-0).

DYHA (2-2-0) beat the Peoria (1-3-0) in a consolation game, 3-2, while the Jr. Coyotes '97 (1-3-0) beat the '97 Polar Bears (0-4-0), 2-0.

Christian Cakebread of DYHA had eight points (four goals, four assists) during the tournament, while the '96 Polar Bears' Jacob Sells had seven (four goals, three assists).

 

Pee Wee B

Though undefeated on its run to the championship game, the Ozzie Bears fell to the CSAHA Jr. Tigers from Colorado Springs, 4-1.

Ozzie finished the tournament 4-1-0.

The Jr. Coyotes went 2-2-0, the Phoenix Polar Bears were 1-3-0 and the Peoria Roadrunners finished 0-4-0.

Jake Hoekstra from Ozzie led all scorers with 12 points (seven goals, five assists). Ryan Woodroffe from the Jr. Coyotes had nine points (five goals, four assists).

 

Squirt A

The Jr. Coyotes B captured the Squirt A championship with a 2-1 win over the Phoenix Polar Bears A, sparked by Jack Dobbins' third period goal.

The Jr. Coyotes B went 5-0-0 and outscored their opponents 32-5.

The Polar Bears A were 3-2-0, the Polar Bears B were 2-2-0, the Peoria Roadrunners B Major were 1-3-0, and the Peoria Roadrunners B Minor were 0-4-0.

Ryan Radke of the Jr. Coyotes B led all scorers with 10 points.

 

Mite A

The Phoenix Polar Bears B took home the Mite A crown, downing the Ozzie Bears, 3-1, behind two goals from Derek Nelson.

The Polar Bears B went 4-0-1. Ozzie, meanwhile finished the tournament 4-1-0.

The Peoria Roadrunners A were 1-2-1, while the Polar Bears A were, DYHA the Peoria Roadrunners B all finished 1-3-0.

Nelson led all Mite A scorers with 17 points, registering 14 goals and three assists.

Ozzie's Harrison Newton had nine points on five goals and four assists.
