U.S. to host women's U18 worlds
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's Under-18 Championship will be held March 27-April 3 at Seven Bridges Ice Arena in the Chicago suburb of Woodridge, Ill., it was announced today by USA Hockey.
The two-sheet facility will host the first-ever IIHF World Women's U18 Championship staged in the United States. During the tournament, the rinks will be named the Walter L. Bush, Jr., Rink, in honor of USA Hockey's chairman of the board and long-time member of the IIHF Council; and the Bob Allen Rink, in honor of the late Bob Allen, lifelong advocate for women's hockey in the United States and chairman of the gold medal-winning 1998 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team.
"We look forward to showcasing the IIHF's newest championship in the United States," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "The Chicago area will serve as a wonderful host for the event."
The eight-nation tournament -- including Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Japan, Russia, Sweden and the United States -- features the world's best female players under 18 years of age.
The United States has won the gold medal at the first two IIHF World Women's U18 Championships, including in Fussen, Germany, in 2008, and in Calgary, Alberta, in 2009.
More information on the event, including ticket information, will be announced later this fall.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The eight teams in the championship will be split into two groups:
Group A: United States, Czech Republic, Finland, Japan
Group B: Canada, Sweden, Germany, Russia
Each team will play three games against opponents within their group. Following round-robin competition, the top team in each group receives a bye to the semifinal round; teams ranked No. 2 and 3 advance to the quarterfinal round; and the two fourth-place teams face off in relegation play.
