DYHA's Pee Wee 98’s keep with winning ways
After taking home a banner over MLK Weekend in San Diego, the Phoenix Firebirds' Pee Wee 98 team was crowned champions yet again last month in the AA bracket of the 33rd annual Colorado Springs Amateur Hockey Association Presidents' Day Tournament.
Tyler Anderson (nine goals, five assists) and Joey Petruzzella (seven goals, five assists) led the Firebirds' offensive charge and finished Nos. 1-2 in division scoring. Goaltender Jack Sampson posted a bracket-best 2.00 goals-against average.
"We played great defense all weekend and scored some timely goals," said co-coach Wayne McBean, whose team finished the Colorado showcase with an impressive 4-0-1 mark. "It took all 16 players working hard every shift for us to be successful."
In the opener, the line of Leighton Fisk, Zack Martin and Trevor Wightman came up big in the Firebirds' 4-2 win over the Bakersfield (Calif.) Dragons.
After a 7-7 tie with the Utah Grizzlies - the line of Anderson, Petruzzella and Jono Taylor combined for six goals in that contest, with defensemen Colton Kramer and Connor Holloway also contributing offensively - the Firebirds edged the Colorado Springs Jr. Tigers, 2-1, thanks to strong defensive efforts from blueliners Quaid McBean, Logan Hicks and Tyler Svendson.
In Game 4, goaltender Tristan Vanderbur stood tall between the pipes and the line of Parker Arendts, Jake Jones and Tanner Snyder set a physical tone upfront as Phoenix bested the Atlanta Fire, 4-1.
In the championship game - a 4-3 win over Utah - Petruzzella rang up a natural hat trick.
